They were based on the primordially Polish breeds - Poznan and Mazuren, which do not currently exist and have almost completely merged with Greater Poland and Lesser Poland.

The Wielkopolska breed was developed after World War II, when aboriginal breeds, including the Polish Konik, were crossed with Trakehner, Hanoverian, Purebred and Arabian to produce an excellent medium-sized horse suitable for riding and harnessing. Presumably, there are two types in the breed - a more massive and coarse, rather sledding old type, and a sporty one, closer to Western European half-blooded horses.

The breed is bred in thirteen stud farms in Poland, five of which breed horses exclusively for sports. Wielkopolska horses are equally suitable for riding and harnessing and are used as improvers in sports horse breeding in Poland.
