The dominant clergy ideal has produced a mentality that is harmful to the clergy as well as to the people and societies they serve. Major reports on clergy sexual abuse have turned to Eugen Drewermann's international bestseller on clergy mentality to understand and shift the clergy ideal from its current harmful form to a healthy form. This talk introduces Drewermann's key ideas on this important subject.
The talk is based on Chapter 4 of Beier's book A Violent God-Image: Introduction to the Work of Eugen Drewermann, available here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/082641835X or here: https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/violent-godimage-9780826418357
In A Violent God-Image: An Introduction to the Work of Eugen Drewermann, the first book-length introduction to Drewermann's work, Beier shows how Drewermann deconstructs centuries-old violent God-images in Christianity that have done harm to individuals and groups across the globe by mutilating souls, devaluing certain group of people, and inadvertently promoting war in the name of God. Drewermann contrasts this with the trust that Jesus portrayed in an unconditionally accepting God who empowers each person, especially against all group think. Beier is also author of the biography of Drewermann (in German), "Eugen Drewermann: Die Biografie" (Patmos 2017).
Beier is Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology and Mental Health Counseling at Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, IN, and a licensed psychoanalyst.
